In the beginning, there was the Word!
And so, it begins…
After several months of planning, my website is finally up and running.
Today is it’s official opening day. However, I’ve actually been adding articles, pictures, and videos for the past few weeks.
It’s like when you have a house constructed. Even though the builders haven’t officially finished, you can’t resist moving in early, because you can’t wait to enjoy it.
And so it is with my website, titled “Express Yourself.” People are invited to express themselves in a variety of ways, as listed on my home page.
My website is going to be a “work in progress.” Even though everything is officially in place, I’m going to constantly be tweaking and redesigning – testing to see what works, rejecting to see what doesn’t; and adding new ideas, when necessary.
To that end, I will be making a blog entry here every day in order to keep you folks posted on my progress. I’m going to give you a full report, listing both my failures (sigh!) and my triumphs (yea!) as I work to make this project a success.
Because this is an introduction, I’m going to include some background information that will probably make this one of my longer entries. So sit back and enjoy it.
After I got the idea for “Express Yourself,” I started by having brochures, posters, and business cards printed. I will soon be distributing them throughout the community.
After that project was complete, I sat down with the idea of setting up the website. For the past several weeks, I’ve been busy designing, seeing what works and what does not.
At first I started with a volume of instructions which is as thick as a New York phone book. But that got boring real quick. I realized I needed an instructor to walk me through the process step-by-step. Fortunately, I quickly found a solution, despite the fact I don’t know anyone personally who could help me with the problem.
On Youtube are many instructors who walk you through the various processes. I selected one, and did just that.
Now, although it simplified things greatly, it wasn’t easy, no sir! There were a number of times I had to muddle through specific areas, all the while using language that wasn’t appropriate in mixed company. Fortunately, I was able to figure things out, allowing me to continue.
As areas opened up, I decided to incorporate certain articles – such as videos, photos and stories. This served the dual purpose of testing the system, and having some content already in place during today’s official opening.
I was very pleased with the results, although I’m certain there will be bugs in the system, Things which I will have to address as they crop up.
Although I’m going to be actively soliciting contributions from you folks (please do!) I realize I’m going to have to contribute the bulk of the material – at least in the beginning. That’s all right, I enjoy keeping my hand in and provide items of interest to the community.
But I designed this website with you folks in mind, and I really hope you’ll take advantage of it. There were times, many years ago, when I was working to establish myself that I really wished for a creative outlet to publish some of my projects. Trouble is, may of those outlets – at the time – were magazines and similar publications which were hard to break into. Here, I encourage submissions as an opportunity to give people a chance to express themselves, even though they have little or no previous experience.
Thanks for listening, and I hope I will see you tomorrow.
